Pool Pump Repair FAQ

Why is my pool pump humming but not starting?

The usual causes are a failed start capacitor, a jammed impeller or a seized motor. Switch it off at the breaker and do not keep resetting it, which can burn out the motor. A quick test tells us which part failed.

Is a leaking pool pump worth fixing?

Usually. Most leaks under the pump come from the shaft seal or an O-ring, which are inexpensive parts. Fix it early, because water that reaches the motor bearings turns a small repair into a motor replacement.

Can I replace my old motor with another single-speed motor?

In California, generally not for motors of half a horsepower or more, which must be variable-speed. We install compliant motors and pumps and program them so the savings are real.

Why is there air in my pump basket?

Air is getting into the suction side, usually through a dry or cracked lid O-ring, a loose union, a leaking valve or a low water level at the skimmer. Left alone, it makes the pump lose prime and run hot.

Do you repair variable-speed pumps too?

Yes. Beyond the usual seals and bearings, variable-speed pumps have drive electronics. We diagnose drive faults and error codes and tell you when the drive or motor itself has to go.
