A saltwater pool conversion in Los Angeles swaps your tablets and liquid chlorine for a salt chlorine generator that makes chlorine at the equipment pad. It is still a chlorine pool; what changes is where the chlorine comes from and how steadily it arrives.

Inside the cell, dissolved salt passes over charged plates, and electrolysis turns it into chlorine that sanitizes the water and then reverts back to salt (Source: Pentair IntelliChlor manual). The salt level is low compared with seawater, but materials and water balance still matter.

The cell is plumbed into your existing above-ground plumbing and powered from the equipment pad. After the conversion, our saltwater pool service keeps salt, stabilizer and cell condition on track, all handled in-house by Pool Cleaning Los Angeles, where our owner does the work.

What's Included in a Saltwater Pool Conversion

  • Fit check. Plaster age, coping and deck materials, metal parts and existing equipment reviewed first.
  • System sizing. A generator rated for your pool volume, with headroom for summer chlorine demand.
  • Installation. The cell goes in the return line after the filter and heater, with the control unit wired to existing pad power.
  • Salt start-up. Salt added to the manufacturer's range, brushed in and circulated until dissolved.
  • Water balance. Stabilizer, pH, alkalinity and calcium adjusted for a salt system.
  • Handoff. Output settings, display lights and warning codes explained so you know what the unit is telling you.

Signs Your Pool Is Ready for Salt

  • You are tired of storing chlorine. Buckets and jugs in the garage are a real hazard: the CDC found that at least 56% of pool chemical injuries happen at a residence (Source: CDC MMWR).
  • Chlorine swings between doses. Strong right after a treatment, low by the end of the week.
  • Your plaster has cured. A newly plastered pool has to finish its start-up period before any salt goes in.
  • Your surroundings can handle salt. Pentair warns that metal parts and certain natural and manmade surfaces are particularly susceptible to corrosion around salt water pools (Source: Pentair).

If your pool has natural stone coping or decking, Hayward's manual recommends consulting a stone specialist about sealing and care before installing a salt system (Source: Hayward Aqua Rite Pro manual). We point out anything that concerns us before you commit.

Our Saltwater Pool Conversion Process

  1. Test and inspectWe test the water, check stabilizer and calcium, and look over the pool, deck and equipment.
  2. Recommend a systemStandalone or tied into automation, sized to your pool and matched to your equipment brand.
  3. Install the cellPlumbing, flow switch and control unit go in at the pad, using existing power.
  4. Add salt and balanceSalt is dosed to the manual's range and the rest of the chemistry is adjusted around it.
  5. Tune the outputWe set production, check free chlorine over the following days and adjust until it holds steady.

Saltwater System Options Compared

Standalone salt systemMost pools making the switchCell needs inspection and eventual replacement; pH tends to creep up

Salt targets are not universal. Hayward's Aqua Rite Pro manual calls for 2,700 to 3,400 ppm, with 3,200 optimal (Source: Hayward), while Pentair's IntelliChlor manual lists 3,600 to 4,500 ppm, with 3,600 ideal (Source: Pentair). Pentair designs that cell to last about 10,000 hours, roughly five years of average use (Source: Pentair).

Salt does not replace stabilizer. Pentair notes that sunlight destroys 90% of unstabilized chlorine within two hours, and it recommends 30 to 50 ppm of cyanuric acid with its system (Source: Pentair). Hayward's chart calls for 60 to 80 ppm (Source: Hayward). We follow the manual for the system on your pad, and our pool chemical service can keep those levels steady.

What Affects the Cost of a Saltwater Conversion

  • Pool volume. Bigger pools need a larger cell and more salt.
  • System type. Standalone units and automation-linked systems differ in parts and setup.
  • Pad plumbing. Space for the cell and how the return line is laid out.
  • Starting chemistry. High stabilizer or calcium may need correcting first, sometimes with a drain and refill.
  • Equipment condition. A weak pump or dirty filter shortens cell life and may need attention.

Saltwater Pool Conversion in Los Angeles: Local Factors

In unincorporated LA County, pool water may go to the sanitary sewer only through a permitted 3-inch P-trap, and salt water pools are excluded from that option (Source: LA County Public Works), so plan ahead for the day the pool needs draining. Hard water adds scale too: SCV Water's Santa Clarita groundwater averaged 354 mg/L of hardness in 2025 (Source: SCV Water), and Pentair says high-hardness areas may need more frequent cell cleaning (Source: Pentair).

Why choose us

Why LA Homeowners Choose Us for Saltwater Conversions

30 days before salt

We Will Not Rush New Plaster

If your pool was just plastered, salt waits. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance says not to add salt within the first 30 days on a new plaster pool (Source: PHTA), and Pentair asks for at least one month of curing before its generator runs (Source: Pentair). We would rather delay your conversion than risk the finish, and we handle the start-up chemistry in the meantime through our new pool startup service.

6 readings, salt included

Salt on Every Report

Salt pools still need regular testing, even with a generator doing the dosing. Weekly customers get a photo of the pool and six readings by text after every visit, and on a salt pool one of them is salt. You also see stabilizer, pH and calcium hardness, which are the numbers that decide whether the cell scales up or keeps producing chlorine the way it should.

1 owner, install to upkeep

The Installer Keeps Servicing It

Because we are owner-operated and have worked every role in pool service, the person who installs your salt system is the same one who can service it every week afterward, so nobody has to learn your pool from scratch. We are licensed and insured for salt chlorine generator work, service is month to month, and you can read more about our owner-operated approach before you call.

FAQ

Saltwater Pool Conversion FAQ

Is a saltwater pool chlorine-free?

No. A salt chlorine generator makes chlorine from the dissolved salt, so the pool is still sanitized by chlorine. The difference is that it is produced steadily at the pad instead of being added by hand.

Do I still need to add chemicals to a salt pool?

Yes, just fewer of them. Most salt pools need acid regularly because pH tends to drift upward, plus stabilizer, the occasional salt top-up and calcium adjustments. Scale on the cell plates is a sign the water is out of balance.

Will salt damage my coping or deck?

It can affect some natural stone and metal parts. Salt system manufacturers warn about corrosion around salt pools and recommend expert advice on stone. We look at your materials before recommending a conversion.

Can I drain a saltwater pool into the sewer?

It depends on where you live. In unincorporated LA County, the sewer drainage option through a permitted P-trap excludes salt water pools. Check your city's rules, or ask us when you plan a drain.

How often does the salt cell need cleaning?

It depends on your water and your system. Cells in hard water areas scale faster, so they need checking more often. Follow your manufacturer's inspection schedule; our saltwater pool service includes cell checks.
